ffxivtips : Final Fantasy VII Remake is being built on Unreal Engine 4

Final Fantasy VII Remake is being built on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, the company announced today. This comes as no surprise since we knew previously Square Enix decided to pass on using its own Luminous Engine for the project, instead focusing all of its efforts on Final Fantasy XV.

“We realize how special Final Fantasy VII is to fans, and we place our trust in Unreal Engine 4 technology and tools to help deliver this long-awaited remake, crafted for modern platforms,” said producer Yoshinori Kitase. “Working with the team at Epic and having their support throughout this process was invaluable and we’re excited to bring the product of that collaboration to long-time fans and newcomers to the series.”

“We’re humbled that Square Enix has chosen Unreal Engine 4 to re-create one of the world’s most beloved video games of all time,” said Taka Kawasaki, territory manager for Epic Games Japan, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “It is a joy to work with the talented developers behind the franchise, and this marks an unforgettable moment in Unreal Engine history.”

Additionally, graphics technology company Geomerics has announced their involvement in FF7 Remake as well, using their “award-winning global illumination technology, Enlighten, as the indirect lighting solution of choice.” According to the company’s own press statement, the “team will continue to work closely with Square Enix throughout development to ensure the final lighting quality exceeds expectations for this highly anticipated title.”

Final Fantasy VII Remake isn’t the only Square Enix property making use of Unreal Engine 4. Both Kingdom Hearts III and Dragon Quest XI are also being made using Epic’s middleware. The Remake itself is set to be a massive project, with each entry will have its own unique story. As a gaming experience, each entry will have the volume of content equal to a full-sized game.
