ffxivtips – Star Wars 7 Director JJ Abrams Admits "Mistake" in Key Scene [SPOILERS]

It’s not often that directors admit that they may have made a mistake in their films, especially massive blockbusters that are still playing in cinemas. But this is exactly what Force Awakens director JJ Abrams has done, when asked about a key complaint from fans. Major spoilers follow…

ffxivtips - Star Wars 7 Director JJ Abrams Admits "Mistake" in Key Scene [SPOILERS]

Abrams is currently promoting his new thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, and was asked by Slashfilm about a moment that occurs towards the end of his Star Wars smash. Rey, Chewbacca, and other resistance fighters have returned from their mission to destroy Starkiller Base, an operation that has cost Han Solo his life. Rey is given a comforting hug by Leia, while poor Chewbacca receives no such sympathy, despite the history and Leia, Han, and Chewie have.

“That was probably one of the mistakes I made,” Abrams admits. “My thinking at the time was that Chewbacca, despite the pain he was feeling, was focused on trying to save Finn and getting him taken care of. So I tried to have Chewbacca go off with him and focus on Rey, and then have Rey find Leia and Leia find Rey.

“The idea being that both of them being strong with the Force and never having met, would know about each other–that Leia would have been told about her beyond what we saw onscreen and Rey of course would have learned about Leia. And that reunion would be a meeting and a reunion all in one, and a sort of commiseration of their mutual loss.

“Had Chewbacca not been where he was, you probably wouldn’t have thought of it. But because he was right there, passed by Leia, it felt almost like a slight, which was definitely not the intention.”

Last week it was confirmed that The Force Awakens would be available in home video form from Disney Movies Anywhere on April 1, before hitting Blu-ray and DVD on April 5.
